How much did your school diplomas mean when getting a job?

In some cases the diploma was the most important thing in getting a job. Other times people were able to get a job even in another "topic" than what they were prepared for.

What was your case?

When I got my first job it had nothing to do with a piece of paper with my qualifications on it. It was who I knew that helped. In fact it was the same once I graduated from college. I got most of my teaching jobs because I made sure I became known with the principals of the schools. It was through them that I managed to get a few long term contracts of work & it didn't have anything to do with the Education Dept. that handed the jobs out.

I havent lost my mind ... its backed up on disc .. somewhere

In France, the diploma is very important. Did you know that there's a classification between all French Engineering Schools? For a given year, they calculate the average wage of all the people graduated this year. And it gives the classification for next year.

In one hand, I think it is a good thing because companies are valuing the schools competences to teach, but in the other hand all the engineers from all schools have studied the same, so it should depend on the candidate competences, and not on their school diploma...
