I used to be a Christian. I had an amazing experience the summer before last where I was in my Youth Group (a Christian one) on holiday. We turned down the lights and played some really nice music. I shut my eyes and it was like "BAM!" - suddenly everything made sense and I felt like I'd really connected with a higher power, that I was aware of how small I was in comparison to everything but also how someone else was out there, looking after me.

I'm still not sure if that experience was "real" or if I was just tired. But since then I've been through a lot of rough times, I've prayed often, making sure I balance the thanks with the askance and my prayers never seemed to get answered, not even loosely. It took over a year for me to cope with my feelings and my situation after I'd first prayed and in the end, it was my athiest friend who helped most. So I don't think God could really have been working through him.

I've been studying the Bible a lot more closely and one day turned around to myself (if that's possible) and said "why am I swallowing all this crap?" and once I started to question it, more fell apart. Lots of areas of the Bible don't fit with my own views or moral standpoint and I don't see the point of taking some of it as a metaphor and some of it literally. I think it's a product of its time and whilst it certainly projects commendable attributes like forgiveness, I don't think the way it was written is appropriate for today's society.

Plus I don't think falling hopelessly in love with my Christian Youth Group Leader (who's married) helped much. I started to disbelieve parts of the Bible and I think that you either take it or leave it all - I don't think it's right to pick out the parts that you like and only follow them. So I decided not to follow it at all.

I still play my clarinet in church and attend my youth group, and I'm definitely still spiritual. The memory of the experience I had has stayed with me and just because it might not have been a Christian God, it doesn't mean it wasn't something else you know? Personally I prefer the Buddhist way a lot more; that you have to find something inside yourself, and once you've found it you have to let go of everything else and trust in it, and only then will you be truly satisfied.

So basically, I'm spiritual but don't adhere to any strict religion.

Sabriel that was heartfelt. Organized religion is hard sometimes. One of my best friends was turned off by religion when she was small when her parents were holy rollers then abused her.

I think the christian church would have been better off to have been organized by women.

As far as being a witch It would be fun. I definitely love the clothes they wear.

I'm Christian, but haven't been to church in I couldn't tell you how long. I only say that because my mom is a Christian, but my father is Penicostal (sp?), and I don't talk to him therefor I consider myself Christian. I need to go to church though.
